SKYE BLUE

Love is a beautiful thing. It really is. I am always so excited when one of my girls meets a dude who knocks her socks off, the same way they are for me when I’m truly smitten with someone. But some time being in love makes a person just a tad bit annoying…

mobile phone with love message1) Incessant Texting and Calling

The other day, a long time colleague had a baby shower, and three of my work mates and I decided to make the trek out to Barrie together. It was yours truly, Tracey, Susan, and Gina, rolling up the 400 highway in Tracey’s sedan.

‘Oh my God! Trey is sooooo darling. Look at the text he just sent me,’ Gina cooed loudly enough to end the conversation Tracey and Susan were having, as she shoved her cell phone into my face.

Why the hell didn’t I say yes when Susan offered me the passenger seat. ‘I miss u so much. Can’t wait to see you tonight. ’ I read aloud, and then glanced toward the front of the car in time to catch Susan looking at me with an expression that could only be interpreted as ‘Is this chick for real?’ (For the record, Gina had recently found love, after years of bad luck with men and we were all happy for her. However, having to hear about every little thing that Trey did since they met four months earlier was definitely getting to be a bit much). ‘Real cute, but Gina, you don’t need to read or show us every—’

Unfortunately for us, Gina was way too blissed out to let me finish. ‘God, I’m so lucky. He’s so sweet,’ she said, mostly to herself, her thumbs flying across the keypad of her phone as she replied to his message. ‘Look what I’m writing back to him.’

Lord, deliver me. Again the phone in my face. ‘Oh honey, I miss you more. MWAH!!!’

Through the rearview mirror I saw Tracey, begin to open her mouth to speak and from the look on her face I knew she was getting ready to drop some real ‘bitter divorcee’ science (her divorce was finalized just weeks before Gina met Trey) on Gina, but before she could say anything we were saved by the bell. It was Gina’s phone ringing, and of course it was Trey. From what I could tell from Gina’s end of the conversation, he had been dying to hear her voice ever since she left him – all of 40 minutes earlier.

Anyway, it turns out that phone call (as well as on the way back hours later), was all we needed to keep our time in the car together peaceful. As Gina spoke to Trey in muted tones on her cell phone, Tracey and Susan comfortably chatted about the events of the day and I caught some much needed shut eye. Hooray for love.

2) Losing Your Righteous Mind Due to Incessant Texting and Calling

Crystal picked up her cell phone and checked it for what must have been the 50th time.  ‘It’s been like, 25 minutes. He has to have gotten my text by now, right?’

I pushed my fork away from me, hoping that moving it out of my reach will prevent me from using it to stab myself in my eye. ‘Crystal, it’s only 9:40 am in B.C. He’s just starting his work day. Give him a chance to get back to you. ’

‘Skye, how long does it take to return a text message?  Plus I called ten minutes after I sent the text. He knows I really want to talk to him. Shouldn’t that be reason enough for him to make an effort to call back if he really cares about me?’  She checked her cell phone again and a pained looked swept across her face. ‘Still no message.’

I had asked Crystal out to lunch the night before, after she called me in a panic because she couldn’t get her beau Mike, who was in Vancouver on a business trip, on the phone. Now as I watched her having a mini melt down in the middle of the crowded restaurant, I was regretting the decision. ‘Look Crystal, he is going to call soon or later. Let’s just order some food and enjoy the time we have together before we both have to head back to work.’

Crystal smiled thinly and then picked up a menu. In that instant her phone beeped twice. She picked it up in lightening speed and read the new text message. Then she frowned and threw the phone down on the table. ‘At least my mother cares that I’m alive.’

Can we cut the melodrama? ‘So what are you going to order?’ I asked.

‘Oh God, how can eat at a time like this,’ she said, as she started to dial a number on her phone.

‘Who are you calling?’

‘Mike. I have to find him. We haven’t spoken in almost 24 hours now, and it’s killing me.’

It’s starting to kill me too. I started to tell her that she should hang up, but then thought better of it. She wasn’t going to listen anyway.

‘Mike, honey. Where’ve you been? I’ve been worried sick about you?’

There was a long silence as she listened to what he was saying.

‘Oooohhh, are you going to try and see a doctor today?…Good…Okay then, we’ll touch base later tonight…I miss you too babe… Bye.’ She ended the call and then informed me that Mike had gone back to his hotel shortly 2pm B.C. time the day before, upchucked most of his lunch due to food poisoning and then proceeded to fall fast asleep. He had missed her calls and texts because he’d been out like a light.

‘So all is well now right? We can get on with lunch?’ I asked, sure that she was finally going to calm down.

‘I guess so,’ she said, a pensive furrow creasing her burrow. ‘If you buy his story. I mean, having a bad case of food poisoning seems like a real convenient excuse for not calling me last night, doesn’t it?

Sigh. I pushed my fork even further away from me and smiled.
